Thread Arcs
IBM Research has produced an interesting little piece on the visualisation of email threads which combines chronology with the branching nature of email communications. Visually it remains fairly simplistic with nodes and connecting arcs but allows you to find messages and see trends in the thread much easier. This has some nice potential.
