Penguin Books Publishing Company

Have a look at Amy Fleisher’s work. Among other things, she’s done a series of work for Penguin Books to celebrate their 75th Anniversary. She’s made a fun little series of book covers featuring the penguin books logo thematised to that particular book’s content. It’s quite cute and playful yet as a graphical device it gets right to the point. I would be nice to see a few more examples to really show the potential of the idea though.

52 McCaul is a great gallery that supports a variety of local and international contemporary art + culture. Founded by grassroots arts organization Well and Good, 52 is an experimental space dedicated to exploring  visual art and design, popular culture, and local + global issues.

For those interested in viewing and even purchasing amazing new + original street art, the gallery features contemporary works and artist multiples from local and international artists. A true Third Place, it is a multi-use space located in the heart of the city’s cultural district and features a curated boutique and compelling programming in a gallery setting. 52 is just south of Dundas Street and OCAD and north of Queen Street West.

Be sure to check out the new Agents of Urban Change exhibit opening Tuesday June 1st followed by a sponsored wrap party Saturday June 5th:

Inappropriately Golden

GoldenBookProfessionalJosh Cooley out of California does a lot of drawing. He does it for his job as a story artist but clearly also for pleasure too. Up on his blog he has a few fun series going on. One of my favorite is his Inapropriate Golden Books – a play on the Little Golden Books published for children, but with a mash-up of inappropriately non-kid-friendly movie material mixed in for good measure. Unfortunately his blog does not have a good categorization or sorting feature which means that you’ll have to hunt a bit for the Inappropriate Golden book pieces in particular, but the good thing is that the rest of the stuff you’ll be sifting through is also worth a look. It’s a shame he doesn’t update more often.

Wind Power

Maybe you’re like me and you like science (SCIENCE!) but you also like quackery and diagrams. Sure maybe you’re not but lets pretend you are and agree that the Fake Science blog is a treasury of delightful combinations of those things. In the current climate where Science is being increasingly questioned by some vocal groups in society who refuse to ‘believe in’ it, this blog serves as a fun parody of the kind of pseudo-scientific ramblings one might overhear at the Taco Bell.

Starting off small…..

So this is my first Ohmpage post and I figured I’d present you with something that has floored everyone who has seen it… no, not that…

Instead of (or inspired by) the ‘pop art’ one liners of Claes Oldenburg >>

Thomas Doyle has been incapsulating artistic miniatures depicting scenes of humanity in the context of the built and natural environment. Doyle shifts scale to give the spectator an almost omnipotent perspective >>

My personal favorite, Reprisal (2006), actually presents itself as an ‘exhibit’ showcasing the innocence/ambitions of humanity >>

Be sure to check out his sketchbook as well,

but don’t take my word for it…

there are others who have tiny obsessions with this art form too.
