If you go to Beijing for the Olympics you can see some really expensive architecture. You can also find some cheap knockoffs – something China is infamous for.
As with retail, the architectural knockoffs can be just as amusing. Perhaps they don’t recreate the original faithfully but they give you something for the effort, even if a kind of commentary on the value of the original.

Last month Ohmpage was sent an 8GB Zune. This new toy had been out in the US for a while now with lots of talk surrounding the little device but surprisingly little solid information since a lot of the discussion ended up in heated opinionated brawls with false analogies and rampant speculation. Spacing Toronto is usually pretty respectable. They’ve just announced a new urban design ideas competition. Lets not get in to the whole debate about weather competitions are appropriate or beneficial for good design. Lets look closer at the intent and the rules. Witold Rybczynski over at Slate has a nice little writeup talking about the Pritzker architecture prize and inquiring as to why it would be awarded to an individual when architecture is not an individual enterprise. What about all the ‘little people’ involved in the process? Its a worthy question to raise and one which should be discussed a lot more.

They’ve just unveiled their new designs over at the royal mint – the result of a big competition. The winning designs are by Matthew Dent from London England. The resulting coinage doesn’t look too bad though they may look dated before long. They should have been producing coins like this twenty or thirty years ago. Should coinage look timeless?
